Located in the Middle East, Jordan, whose official name is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, has Amman as its capital.
A Country with a population of little more than 6 million, in a territory with an area of approximately 90 thousand km2, it is divided into 12 “governorships”, with Arab as its national language, followed by English as its second idiom.
Jordan borders to the North with Syria, to the East with Iraq, to the East and the South with Saudi Arabia and to the West with Israel, the Palestinian West Bank and with Egypt, through the Gulf of Aqaba maritime border. territory
Politically based upon a constitutional monarchy, established on May 25, 1946 and on a constitution approved on January 1, 1952, its Head of State is King Abdullah II, who succeeded to King Hussein on February 7, 1999. The legal system is based on Islamic Law (Shari’a) and on French codes of law. The official currency is the Jordanian dinar.
With a GNP of 14.3 billion dollars, in 2006, and a 6.4% rate of growth in the same year, Jordan has as its main natural products phosphates and potassium. With only 10% of its land agriculturally viable, half of this cultivated area is dedicated to the production of fruit, vegetables, wheat, olives and olive oil. Its industry represented 26.5% of GNP in 2006. Its export market is essentially based on phosphates, potassium, clothing, fertilizers, pharmaceutical and agricultural products, and reached a value of 5.17 billion dollars in 2006.
With its origins going back to the year 2000 AC, when the Semites formed a colony around the River Jordan, Jordan is a country with a vast heritage, with tourism as one of the areas showing greater growth. Petra Old City is one of the major parts of this heritage and has been named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World from July 7 last.
The Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, 402 metres below sea level, the River Jordan, the place where Jesus Christ was baptized, Jerash, Madaba, Al Karak, Umm Qais, Ajlun, Wadi Rum, Aqaba and of course, Amman, its capital, are an obligatory tourist route, where religion and faith are ever present.
