President Cavaco Silva congratulated the European Institutions for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union

The President of the Republic addressed a message of congratulations to the European Institutions, following the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“I received the news of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union with the greatest of pleasures.

Throughout many decades, the European Union has contributed towards world peace, either through the numerous initiatives it has been taking on a universal scale or, above everything else, with its example of an area of cooperation, freedom and democratic respect for human rights.

In the current historical context, the award of this prize has a precise significance, both symbolically and politically. It was only possible to conquer the Nobel Peace Prize because the European Union, due to the vision of its leaders and the will of its peoples, is a model of democracy, peace and cohesion and an example of harmony for the whole world. The dream of the founding fathers of the European Communities has been achieved: Europe, laid waste by two wars, is crossing the lengthiest period of peace and cooperation of its History of many centuries.

It is essential that its member States are equal to the responsibilities placed upon them by the present and that their leaders do all in their power in order that the foundations of the Union are kept firm and unwavering. Cohesion between all of us must be preserved, conscious as we are that we live together in a unique space, in which divergence and differences do not threaten a common goal, but rather contribute towards its enrichment and strengthening.

In our time, it is essential that the Union continues as a model of peace, cooperation and solidarity. If selfish nationalisms had prevailed over the founding spirit of the Communities, the European Union would no be a real union – and would not have achieved today this Nobel Peace Prize, which fills us all with pride and great joy.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
