President of the Republic addressed message to German President Christian Wulff, on the Day of German Unity

The President addressed a message to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the occasion of the Day of German Unity.

Following is the text of the message:

“Mr. President and Dear Friend,

On the occasion of the celebrations of the Day of German Unity, I am very pleased to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and our most sincere wishes for the progress and prosperity of the German People.

Portugal and Germany have long shared a history of friendship and cooperation based upon the valuable contribution of the community of Portuguese descendants that are resident and work in Germany and that nowadays assert themselves in various areas. Whilst partners within the European Community, our two countries share the commitment for the building of a more united Europe, stronger and yet more capable to answer the challenges of the contemporary world.

I am very pleased to distinguish, on this occasion, how we have been able to strengthen the bonds of cooperation that we maintain both bilaterally and internationally, on behalf of the promotion of the values of peace, stability and of the peaceful resolution of discords, and on behalf of the building of a better and fairer world with greater prosperity.

Renewing with Your Excellency my personal drive for the continued deepening of our relationship, I beg you to accept, Mister President and Dear Friend, my highest regard and personal esteem.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
