The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Bishop of Porto, D. Manuel Clemente, upon the passing away of the bishop emeritus of the Diocese, D. Armindo Lopes Coelho.

Following is the text of the message addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:

"I was greatly distressed with the news of the death of D. Armindo Lopes Coelho, bishop emeritus of Porto, an outstanding individuality of the Portuguese Catholic Church, with notable intellectual qualities and deep social sensitivity.

At this time of mourning for all those who had the privilege of being acquainted with him, I address my heartfelt condolences to the Porto Diocese and to its entire congregation.
