The President of the Republic addressed a message of congratulations to the former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, on his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The text of the message is as follows:

“On behalf of Portugal and in my own personal name I wish to very warmly congratulate you on having been awarded the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize.

I am particularly pleased that the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize recognizes the merit of actions in favour of world Peace and stability. Your Excellency’s permanent and untiring dedication to the cause of the peaceful resolution of international conflict, is a particularly opportune example and stimulus in the period we are currently going through.

While renewing my congratulations I beg you to accept the expression of my highest esteem and personal regard.
