King of Spain welcomed Portuguese President
- President Cavaco Silva on a State Visit to Spain

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva started their State Visit to Spain, at the invitation of the Kings of Spain, with a welcoming ceremony in Pardo Palace in Madrid, in the presence of the Spanish sovereigns, D. Juan Carlos and Doña Sofia.
A meeting between the two couples, followed by a private lunch party at the Zarzuela Palace, with the presence of the Princes of Asturias, was the next stage of the programme for the first day of the presidential visit.
In a private ceremony, the King of Spain decorated the Portuguese Head of State with the Grand Order of Isabella the Catholic, whilst President Cavaco Silva awarded the Spanish sovereign with the Grand Cross of the Order of Avis.
