Department of Portuguese

The Department of Portuguese, created in 2000, offers a solid foundation in the Portuguese language and a comprehensive curriculum of courses in the literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. The literatures and cultures of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guiná-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor are taught in a multidisciplinary context and levels of BA, MA and PhD. Beyond the regular academic year program, the annual Summer Program of Portuguese features intensive courses in language and Lusophone literatures and cultures.

MA in Portuguese Studies

The Department of Portuguese offers a graduate program based on the collaboration with the departments of Art History, History, Political Science and Sociology/Antropology. The MA in Portuguese Stuides gives graduates an in-depth understanding of the literary and cultural history of the Portuguese-speaking world within a broad, interdisciplinary context of humanities and social sciences. Course offerings are complemented by frequent guest lectures, colloquia, and an international peer-reviewed academic journal, Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies.

In addiction to regular curricular offerings, students take seminar-level courses taught by a rotating pool of distinguished visiting scholars, in residence at UMass Dartmouth as holders of the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies.

PhD in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Theory

The PhD in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Theory aims to build on the success and potential of existing Portuguese programs at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, particularly the Master of Arts in Portuguese Studies (offered since Fall 2004).

With six tenure-line faculty, all of whom teach graduate courses in the Graduate Studies Program, the Department of Portuguese is the largest Portuguese program in the nation. Additionally, there are seven faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts whose scholarly expertise falls primarily in the area of Portuguese, Brazilian, or Lusophone African studies and who, since 2004, have been formally affiliated with the Graduate Studies Program in Portuguese, cross-listing their relevant courses at the graduate level and participating actively in the 2005-06 interdepartmental faculty and graduate student seminar on “Interdisciplinary Research and Teaching in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies”.
