Engineering Unit No. 3 (UNENG3), was set up with forces from the Regiment of Engineers No. 3 (Espinho) from the Army Intervention Brigade, and commenced operations in the Lebanon on November 26, 2007.
This unit is located in the Shama area, in Southeast Lebanon, with 141 soldiers whose mission will continue until May 2008.
The National Detached Force (FND) in UNIFIL carries out general engineering support work, survival support and mobility support within its area of responsibility, thus contributing towards the rehabilitation and development of the infrastructures in the Lebanon Theatre of Operations, in support of UNIFIL.
Prior to UNENG3 two other similar units had already been planned: UNENG1 of the Mechanized Brigade (Santa Margarida) between November 2006 and May 2007, and UNENG2 of the Regiment of Engineers No. 1 (Lisbon - Pontinha) between May and November 2007.
The national contingent in the Lebanon, in addition to UNENG3, includes five further officers, located in the UNIFIL general headquarters, in Naqoura.
