The 17th Iberian-American Summit Meeting of Heads of State and of Government takes place in Santiago do Chile on November 9 and 10, its central theme being social cohesion and the development of social policies with the aim to attain more inclusive societies in the geographical areas of the participating countries.
Throughout its existence, the Conference of Iberian-American Countries has become an area of joint reflection on global and regional topics, in a context of cooperation which favours specific projects and programmes, with its member countries constituting an area of common cultural interests.
Prior to the Santiago Summit, eleven ministerial sector meetings, two forums –parliamentary and local government - , two meetings – civic and entrepreneurial – and dozens of other events involving representatives of the 22 member countries, had already taken place.
Portugal is a member of the Conference of Iberian-American Countries since its foundation, in 1991, in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. The other members are: Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Equador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The Iberian-American Conference has enjoyed United Nations Observer status since 2005.
