Meeting in the National History Museum
The Presidents of Portugal and Brazil, Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, met in Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the State Visit of the Portuguese Head of State to Brazil.
The meeting was held in the National History Museum, prior to the official ceremony opening the exhibition “A New World, A New Empire”.
With the standards of the two countries raised in the patio of the Museum, the two Presidents listened to the Portuguese and Brazilian national anthems, played by a military band dressed up in uniforms of the time of King João VI, after which speeches were addressed by them both.
During the ceremony, the commemorative medal of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese court in Brazil was launched by the Medal Club/Brazilian Mint, with breakage of dies and cancellation of the stamps allusive to the event issued by the Posts & Telegraphs Company of Brazil.
After this, both Presidents, together with Mrs. Cavaco Silva and Mrs. Lula da Silva, visited the exhibition which will remain open to the public during the following months.
