President of the Republic in Berlin on an official visit to Germany

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva have arrived in Berlin where, on Tuesday, they begin a four day State Visit to Germany at the invitation of President Horst Köhler. Courtesy Ranks and a 21 gun salute signalled the presence of the Portuguese Head of State in Tegel Airport.

In the German federal capital, the President of the Republic will hold meetings with Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the Speaker of Parliament, Norbert Lammert, and with the Burgomaster of the City-State of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit.

Still in Berlin, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva will preside at the inaugural acts of the exhibitions “Manoel de Oliveira”, dedicated to the work of the Portuguese film maker, and “Portugal outside Portugal”, featuring Portuguese contemporary architecture throughout the world. They will also attend a dinner and “fado” concert which is included in the international campaign promoting tourism in Portugal.

Later, the visit will be extended to Munich, capital of the State of Bavaria, and to Osnabrück, in the State of Lower Saxony, where the President will meet the Portuguese resident Community.

In this visit the President of the Republic’s retinue will include several members of the Government, members of the political parties represented in Parliament and more than 30 entrepreneurs who will take part in the events covering economic matters included in the programme, amongst which the “Germany/Portugal Entrepreneurial Meetings”, in Berlin, promoted by AICEP and by the Federation of German Chambers of Commerce, and contact their German counterparts with the objective to strengthen trading and investment relations between both countries.
