The President of the Republic attended the official opening of the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations, in New York, after a welcoming ceremony in the head quarters of the organization hosted by its Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.

After the opening, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva held bilateral meetings with the President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, and with the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd.
