In the beginning of his visit to New York, to attend the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of the Republic met with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.

Later, the President and Mrs. Cavaco Silva attended a reception that the President of the United States, George W. Bush, hosted on this occasion in honour of the Heads of State and of Government present in New York.
