Visit to the Autonomous Region of the Azores

 

The President of the Republic commences on October 6, a five day official visit to the Azores Autonomous Region, which will include four of the islands in the archipelago: Terceira, Pico, Faial and São Miguel.

This is President Aníbal Cavaco Silva’s first visit to the Azores since he was elected, and takes place at a time when the Azoreans are signalling the 50th Anniversary of the eruption of Capelinhos Volcano. The President also wishes to underline the success of the region’s autonomy, both political and administrative as well as in economic and social development.

The visit of the President to the Azores will also feature a campaign in the Route to Science, dedicated to the Sciences and Technologies of the Sea, thus emphasizing the importance of the archipelago as an oceanic platform, as a link between land and sea. A sea which is extremely relevant as an added value for the Portuguese.

In visiting the Azores, the President of the Republic is not only addressing the inhabitants of the archipelago, but also all the Azoreans of the Diaspora, many of whom he has contacted in various parts of the world.

In Azorean lands, the President is addressing all their people a message of greetings, esteem, friendship and faith in the future.
