The President of the Republic was conferred with a Degree Honoris Causa by the University of León, in Spain, during a ceremony held in the City Auditorium with the presence of the Princes of Asturias.
 
After having received the insignia of the Degree – by the Faculty of Economic and Entrepreneurial Sciences – from the Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ángel Penas Merino, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva addressed an academic dissertation. 

The ceremony was attended by the Chancellors of the Universities of the Centre North of Portugal and by the Chancellors of the Spanish Universities of Castilla y León.
