President congratulates participants in the International Mathematics Olympiad

“Upon being advised that Portugal had been awarded the gold medal in the International Mathematics Olympiad, held in Holland with the participation of 574 students from more than one hundred countries, I highly congratulate the young winner, 16 year old Miguel Martins dos Santos, a 10th year student from Alcanena Secondary School.

In addition to the gold medal, Portuguese contestants João Magalhães dos Santos and Raul Penaguião were awarded bronze medals.

These are results that should fill us with pride, and applause is also due to the Portuguese Mathematics Society, to the Schools, the teaching staffs and to the families that contributed to this great success.

To all I address my congratulations and best wishes for continuing successful studies.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
