The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to Emperor Akihito over the victims of the tragic effects of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan.
Following is the text of the message of condolences addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:
"Majesty,
Upon receiving the terrible news of the tragic effects of the violent earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan I wish to extend to Your Majesty and to the People of Japan, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our heartfelt sympathy and our very deepest regrets.
In these difficult moments our thoughts go particularly to the families of the victims and to all those who suffered irreparable losses, to whom we beg Your Majesty to forward our most sincere condolences.
