The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to the President elect of the Republic of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla.

Following is the text of the message:

"Madam President Elect,

On the occasion of Your Excellency’s election as President of the Republic of Costa Rica, I am pleased to address you, on behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and best wishes for your success in the performance of the high office you have been called upon to accomplish.

I am certain that in the exercise of Your Excellency’s mandate, we will find renewed opportunities to further deepen the historic bonds of friendship and close cooperation which link our two countries, both bilaterally and within the scope of the Iberian American Community of Nations, for the benefit of our Peoples.

Renewing my sincere congratulations, I beg you to accept, Madam President, my very highest regards and personal esteem.
