The President of the Republic was informed of the death of Doctor António Henrique de Oliveira Marques and paid tribute to this unique academician, researcher and great historian who was a remarkable personality of Portuguese culture.

Author of a vast oeuvre covering such diverse periods as the history of Portugal, of the Middle Ages and of the I Republic, a prestigious professor at several Portuguese and foreign universities and respected in all the posts he occupied, Oliveira Marques deserves our admiration and profound respect.

With his death the Portuguese lose one of the scholars who most helped us learn about our common history in the last century. His legacy and his memory will live on.
