Message from the President of the Republic addressed to the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the United States of America

Mister President,

On the occasion of the celebrations of the Independence Day of the United States of America, I wish to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations, and beg that you equally accept our friendly and sincere wishes for Your Excellency’s and your family’s personal well being, as well as for the prosperity and progress of the People of North America.

Historical allies, Portugal and the United States of America were able to build a strong and amicable relationship which is expressed in many areas. The excellence of our relationship is also due, as Your Excellency and I myself have emphasized, to the very relevant contribution of the Portuguese and Luso-descendant community resident in the United States of America.

I am certain, Mister President, that we will be able to find, in the future, new opportunities to strengthen our bilateral relations and to multilaterally provide proof of the communion of values upon which our relationship is based.

Renewing my sincere congratulations, I beg Your Excellency to accept my highest regards and personal esteem.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva
President of the Portuguese Republic
