The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of ceramist Master José Franco.

Following is the text of the President’s message:

"On behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name I address our heartfelt condolences to the Family of Master José Franco.

José Franco possessed a unique talent, converting a popular craft into an art recognized in Portugal and abroad. His clay sculptures interpret a deep knowledge of the reality of rural Portugal and also show the artistic sensitivity which he imparted to his vast work.

In this hour of mourning it is with deep sadness that I pay my tribute to a man who dedicated his whole life to the perfection and dissemination of one of the greatest traditional Portuguese arts.
