The President of the Republic sent a message of condolences to the President of the Republic of Argentina, on the passing away of former President Raul Alfonsín.

Following is the text of the message:

"Madam President

It was with regret that I received the news of the passing away of the former President of Argentina, Raul Alfonsín.

I this hour of morning I wish to address Your Excellency and all Argentineans, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our most sincere condolences, and request that you equally transmit to the bereaved family our deepest regrets.

Raul Alfonsín will be recalled by all as a politician of causes, symbol of the Argentinean transition to democracy and a staunch defender of the regional integration of Latin America.
