At the beginning of the State Visit he is holding in Portugal, the President of the German Federal Republic, Joachim Gauck, met with President Cavaco Silva in the Palace of Belém.

After visiting the Jerónimos Monastery, where he laid a wreath on the tomb of Luis Vaz de Camões, the German President arrived at the Palace

of Belém where he was welcomed with military honours.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva then held a short meeting with the German President and Mrs. Daniela Schadt, this being followed by a meeting between the two Heads of State and their respective retinues.

At the end of this meeting both Presidents held a Press Conference.
