President of the Republic sent condolences to the Family of Mrs. Maria de Jesus Barroso

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Mrs. Maria de Jesus Barroso.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon receiving the news of the passing away of Mrs. Maria de Jesus Barroso I address the bereaved Family, in my name and that of my Wife, our very deepest condolences.

A woman of culture and of causes, Maria de Jesus Barroso distinguished herself, during decades, as a fighter on behalf of freedom and democracy, both before and after the 25th April.

She dedicated her life to Portuguese culture, to education, to pedagogy and to the causes to which she was linked, all of this with exemplary civic sense, encouraged by the deepness of her faith and by her unshakeable conviction in the values of the dignity of the human being, of social justice and of the service to the common weal.

Her love for her country and her dedication to her family were references to all the Portuguese who today deeply regret the loss of an exemplary individuality of our times.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
