President inaugurates RAPID system
The President of the Republic assisted, in Pedras Rubras Airport, in Porto, to the debut of a new Border Control electronic system, known as RAPID – Automatic Recognition of Documented Passengers, conceived by the Immigration and Border Control Authority (SEF), and produced by the company known as Vision-Box. This is the first system in the world that permits the automatic control of passengers holding solely their electronic passports.
Presentation of cooperation projects
In the visit made to the Lisbon Graduate Institute of Engineering (ISEL), a school known for its strong links with industry, the President of the Republic was given information concerning two innovative projects under way, one contributing to the development of equipment and subsystems of the ATM network and the other regarding the development of a new generation of technologies for the Via Verde (Automatic Motorway Toll).
Interviewed by students in the Virtual Studio
The President of the Republic included the Graduate School of Journalism, an establishment integrated in the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute, in another campaign of the Route to Science. Equipped with an analogical and a digital television studio, two radio studios and one journalism newsroom, the School also has available several multimedia development classrooms for various platforms, from television to mobile phones.
Centre for Operational Coordination
President Cavaco Silva visited BRISA’s centre of entrepreneurial activity, in S. Domingos de Rana, where he was shown the diverse systems used in the operation and management of the motorway network, with recourse to means derived from Research and Development (R&D), both internally developed and in cooperation with external partners.
President viewed Research Projects
In the beginning of the 4yh Route to Science, dedicated to Information and Communication Technologies, the President of the Republic visited the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the Nova University of Lisbon (Almada), a higher education institution which has steered internationally recognized relevant research projects in this area.
Visit the Castle of Feira
In the final stage of the 2nd Campaign of the Route to Heritage, the President of the Republic visited the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira, where a presentation concerning the castle was exhibited.
Arouca Monastery
Following the 2nd Campaign of his Route to Heritage, dedicated to the Provinces of Beira and Douro Litoral, the President of the Republic visited the Arouca Monastery, its cloisters and church, as well as the Sacred Art Museum of the Royal Brotherhood of Queen Santa Mafalda.
Arrival in Lorvão
In the final part of the first day of the 2nd Campaign of the Route to Heritage President Aníbal Cavaco Silva visited Lorvão Monastery and its church and cloisters.
President visits the Joanina Library
The Capelos Hall, the Chapel of St. Michael and the Joanina Library were some of the sites in the University of Coimbra visited by the President of the Republic in the course of his Route to Heritage, followed by the Science Museum where he took part in the presentation of the application for UNESCO World Heritage of Higher Coimbra, during which he delivered a speech.
Meeting with University professors and researchers
During a further stage of the 2nd Campaign of the Route covering this theme, now dedicated to the Provinces of Beira and Douro Litoral, the President of the Republic met, in the Palace of S. Marcos, in Coimbra, with university professors and researchers working on Heritage projects.
