President of the Republic sent condolences to the Family of Professor Vítor Crespo

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Professor Vítor Crespo.

Following is the text of the message of condolences:

“Having been notified of the passing away of Professor Vítor Crespo, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

Lecturer in Coimbra University, Professor Vítor Crespo distinguished himself due to his civic humanism and to his deep sense of public duty. Due to such principles and values, he was made responsible for several very relevant offices, specifically that of Speaker of the National Parliament. He also stood out as Minister of Education, Member of Parliament, Ambassador and Portuguese Standing Representative with UNESCO.

Throughout his career, he was noted for his defence of education, culture and knowledge as essential components for the Country’s development, disinterestedly serving Portugal, as exemplary as he was contrary to playing special roles.

Those who had the privilege of his personal acquaintance will forever recall his touching affability.

The Country must pay tribute to such a wise and honourable man, who deeply loved his Homeland.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
