The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of General António Soares Carneiro.

Following is the text of the message of condolences sent by President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon receiving the news of the passing away of General António Soares Carneiro,
I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

General Soares Carneiro was a highly distinguished officer of our Armed Forces, with a brilliant career connected to the setting up of the Commando Troops, which later led him to the performance of the superior duties of Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, and was in every circumstance, an outstanding figure due to his notable capabilities of leadership and for his promotion of military culture and values.

As a soldier and a public individual, General Soares Carneiro dedicated the best of his personal qualities, the rigour of his intelligence and his admirable moral integrity to his Country, which he served with notable self denial and patriotism.
