President of the Republic congratulated D. Manuel Clemente upon his appointment as Patriarch of Lisbon

The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to D. Manuel Clemente following his appointment by Pope Francis as Patriarch of Lisbon.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“On the occasion of Your Excellency’s appointment as Patriarch of Lisbon, please allow me, D. Manuel Clemente, to present my most respectful congratulations for this evident distinction and regard shown by His Holiness Pope Francis.

His choice for the head of the Lisbon Patriarchate represents, I am certain, the recognition of the course trodden by the server of the Church and illustrious academician, the man of culture and the exemplary citizen.

Portuguese society, which you know so well, recalls your discerning and moderate addresses, as well as the social and humanistic sense of your actions, qualities that are extremely relevant in the very demanding moment that the country is going through.

Please accept my sincerest wishes for success in the exercise of your ecclesiastical magistracy and the expression of my highest regard and personal esteem.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
