The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Eurico de Melo.

Following is the text of the message of condolences sent by President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon being advised of the passing away of Eurico de Melo, my Wife and I address the bereaved Family our deepest condolences.

Eurico de Melo distinguished himself in Portuguese public life, as a member of government and entrepreneurial manager, due to being faithful to his principles and to his steady convictions.

An individuality from the Country’s North, he was always linked to his original roots, even when his stance as a public personage attained national status and aroused the admiration and the respect of the Portuguese, especially those who had the privilege of being close to him. He never allowed himself to be dazzled by his brilliant intelligence, by his unusual intellectual capabilities or by his extraordinary dynamism.

As a member of government, he dignified the Portuguese State in the exercise of the highest offices in our democratic Republic. He was an independent citizen who loved his Country. Portugal owes him much and has become poorer with the loss of his cool perspicuity. We shall all feel the lack of Eurico de Melo’s presence, of his sober attitude and of his model of dignity.

At this time, we are only comforted by knowing that we shall always be able to count upon his unforgettable luminous example.
